Elk Grove Lions Club History

The Elk Grove Village Lions Club was chartered in November of 1958 with 29 members. The club immediately entered into its first fund raising project by selling Christmas trees to the residents of Elk Grove. In its second year, the club instituted the first All Village Invitational Golf tournament. The club also started the Elk Grove Village Birthday Calendar and an annual Halloween party for children.

On June 15th, 1961, a high point in the clubs history took place when Lions Park and a swimming pool was opened and dedicated. The project was brought to fruition by the hard working members who took on the tasks of painting, landscaping, administration, and management. The entire facility was given to the Elk Grove Park District seven years later with only a small construction mortgage remaining. As the club continued to grow, community projects such as “Meet Your Candidates Nights”, “Meet Your Neighbor Day”, contributions of raincoats for crossing guards, free pre-school eye screening, eyeglasses for needy youngsters, Christmas baskets to deserving families, fracture room cardiac arrest equipment to St. Alexius Hospital and much more were a club priority. Along with the many other accomplishments of the Elk Grove Village Lions Club, thousands of dollars raised through the annual Candy Day project were distributed for purposes of sight conservation and assistance to the blind and sight handicapped. Other major contributions to the community included 2 ambulances donated to the Elk Grove Village Fire Department, a 54 passenger bus to the Elk Grove Village Park District, and an evidence van to the Elk Grove Village Police Department.

In 1963, the Lions brought the circus to town and in 1964 replaced the project with the annual Fourth of July Celebration. This project has continued every year since then.

The members of the Elk Grove Village Lions Club take pride in their accomplishments but recognize that none of them would be possible without you, our neighbors and business owners. Your support in helping us with our projects is of great importance. We would like to say to all of you, thank you.
